Who needs a visa?

In general, nationals of non-EU countries (third-country nationals) 
require a visa to enter Germany.
Citizens of certain countries are exempt from the visa requirement for 
short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You can check the current list of visa requirements by country.

Where do I apply?

Visas are issued by German Embassies and Consulates abroad.
The mission responsible for your place of residence will 
handle your application.

Types of visa

  • Schengen visa – for short stays up to 90 days
  • National visa – for longer stays (e.g. study, work, family reunification)

Visa fees

  • Schengen visa: usually EUR 90
  • National visa: EUR 75

Processing times

  • Schengen visas: up to 14 working days
  • National visas: may take several weeks or months, depending on the purpose of stay
